  Keys to An Effective Website

Getting a website is the easy part.  Making sure your site is effective, however, can be rather challenging.  The following tips will help to ensure that your website remains effective and attractive.

Design Considerations

  1. Assume everyone will have their screen set to 640x480 and 256 colors.
This is the usual standard for most web users and will ensure that your site will be accessible to most users.
  2. Do not create pages that take more than 30 to 60 seconds to load at 28.8K.
  3. Be sure that your website can be viewed using both Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  4. Be aware of your ISP's hosting limitations such as: the maximum number of pages accessed per month; the maximum number of bytes downloaded per month; and whether or not CGI-BIN and Server Side Includes are allowed.
  5. Be sure to check your spelling & grammar. Nothing is more annoying than inaccuracies on what is supposed to be a "professional" website.
  6. Never include an image or animation that is called from someone else's site. If the animation is not yours and protected, give credit where credit is due.

Animation Considerations

  1. Use animation sparingly. Too much animation will take away from the main purpose of your website.

  2. Use thumbnails when you do have a lot of images to present on one page and link the larger images to them.

  3. Always indicate the HEIGHT and WIDTH of your images for browser interpretation.

  4. Avoid browser specific tags; they will be ignored if the viewer's browser does not support the tag.

  5. Provide an alternative means of viewing your information to ensure that if a browser does not support your script, users will still have access to the information.

Content Considerations

  1. Re-use navigation icons to provide a consistent look and feel to your site.
  2. Pick a color theme and stick to it.  Changing color schemes on every page is confusing.
  3. Stick to your mission. Do not fill your site with stuff that does not matter.  It may distract users from the topic and defeat your site's purpose.
